Marielvira Santos Baquero

Marielvira, my  grandaunt, was the first woman economist of Colombia.

Not only was she the first woman economist

Before graduating, she worked and took courses in the UN Economic Commission for Latin America in Chile.

She sent this picture to my

grandfather while she was in Chile.

She was awarded the prize for best student of her cohort.

This is the minute from the meeting where the Departmet agreed to give her the most prestigous award in her department, the Placa de los Fundadores award.

I am not mentioning Marielvira on my webpage because I believe I hold her legacy in any way. I share this fact because it is easy to forget how precarious women's rights were only two generations ago. While my grandfather's sister was the best student in her University cohort, she could not vote. Women have come very far, and she is a constant reminder of that.
